I Trust Your Absence Will Remain

At first, I titled this piece Absent.

Absent has a sense of casually missing—
expected, but not yet arrived.

Merely absent?

Then came trust.

Trust that you’ll be there.
Trust that you’ll stay.
Trust that you’ll leave.

Trust in you.
Trust in myself.

And finally, remain.

Remain, as in stay.
Remain, as in what is left over from the whole.
Or simply, remaining the same—
head cocked,
knowing change is inevitable.

Remain.
